St. Petersburg - Eckerd College 50th Birthday!
Eckerd College in St. Petersburg is celebrating it’s fiftieth anniversary! Chartered in ‘58 by the Legislature as the Florida Presbyterian Collage. When the school was facing tough financial issues, Florida drug store owner, Jack Eckerd injected cash in 1971 and the college survived. Not long after the it honored Eckerd by naming the college after him. There are some nifty architectural highlights across the campus and here are a few photos.

Above is a small forest planted by the class of ‘67.

I miss Eckerds. That was a good Pharmacy. My dad was a pharmacist in the age that predated the drive-thru. That was a slap in the face of what once was a much more prestigious job. I like the pharmacy model better in Europe, they don’t cluster it with a convenience/grocery store. That gives it more of a medical polish.

Sometime down the road, we’ll have a photo of the old Eckerds and also some of what have become of their locations. Remember the Publix & Eckerds combos across the state?
