In 2006, Sandra got involved with a local effort to designate State Road 40 from Silver Springs to Ormond Beach as the Florida Black Bear Scenic Byway. Through the efforts of many volunteer members of the group, the state designated SR 40 a scenic byway in February 2008.
Sandra created and continues to maintain this nonprofit website. Her photos add interest to many pages of the site; content is derived from documents developed by the committee and from her knowledge of the region.
Search beyond the interstates, the strip malls and shopping centers, the theme parks and condo clusters, and you’ll find a Florida that hasn’t changed in generations. Live oaks ruffle in the breeze above a herd of shaggy cattle, and sparkling water burbles out of a crack in a limestone cliff, spitting out sharks’ teeth and rainbows.
